Offered for sale is a high quality Smiths, British made, mechanical Wrist Watch from Circa. 1958. These watches were made at the Smiths/Ingersoll factory at Ystradgynlais near Swansea in South Wales - the factory closed in the early 1970s. The watch is in working order, having benefited from a professional repair, clean and service at the Ystrad Watch Service Centre (now closed but it was run by former employees of Smiths) in October 2003 and it has not been used since.

Movement: Smiths signed: C225217, 11½ Ligne (26.25 mm), 15 Jewels, subsidiary seconds dial at the six, movement accessed/fitted through bezel.

Case: Stainless steel, 31 mm dia., snap back, 16 mm lugs, chromed brass bezel.

Face: White enamelled face with luminous Arabic numerals and luminous steel hands.

Mechanical watches make the ideal gift - classic appearance and no battery to fade or fail. They do, however, require attention from time to time by a competent watchmaker and although usually good timekeepers, a mechanical watch needs to be wound regularly and carefully. Timekeeping is unlikely to match the performance of modern quartz movements but, if properly looked after and regularly serviced, a mechanical watch will still be keeping good time long after its modern counterpart has ceased to function.
